Top Kayak Fishing Apps

Kayak Fishing Apps

If you’re like me and use your smartphone for work and play, you are probably already finding ways to use it for all your hobbies. Why then should kayak fishing be any different? I thought I’d pass along the apps that I found which can really enhance or add some additional fun to the sport of kayak fishing or any fishing for that matter. I’d love to say that this blog was supported by these apps like Chad Hoover and his Scoutlook app, but we’re just not that cool....yet!

One other quick note, these are apps I’ve used and tested on Android phones not Apple. A couple of the Apps below are based off Google Maps which is by far the best online map source available in my opinion. (If you don’t believe me, talk to someone who has used Apple Maps!) Now, moving on, here are my top kayak fishing apps.

My Tracks by Google
One of my favorite GPS apps of all time. If you paddle a lot you’ll love this app. Start it up when you hit the water and it will record your route wherever you go. It runs in the background, doesn’t consume a ton of battery and the best part about the app is you don’t need any service for it to record your route. You can record and then view your trip online via Google Maps. My Tracks also has playback feature through Google Earth which will let you watch and play back your route on Google Earth. Really comes in handy when you are trying to remember that one secret, hard to find fishing spot! Information such as average speed, max speed, elevation and distance traveled are all recorded and viewable.

Alpine Quest
Alpine Quest is similar to My Tracks but with a ton more features. I use Alpine Quest more for planning kayak fishing trips, especially river trips, than anything else. When you are fishing rivers with a put-in and take-out at different places you can mark both on the map and the app will tell you how far away from each spot you are at any time. You can also mark spots you want to fish ahead of time or mark that secret fishing hole while you’re out on the water. This app is especially helpful when planning to kayak fish an unfamiliar area. Alpine Quest will also track your route and you can even save landmarks while recording. MyTracks does a better overall job of recording your trip but Alpine Quest has more features. Alpine Quest, like My Tracks, does not need service to run. Just pull up the map of the area before you lose service and it will store the map for viewing once you lose service.

Tide Chart
This is a handy app for all those that are lucky enough to kayak fish in saltwater. The name says it all. Fairly simple app that shows you the always important times of high and low tide. You can also view the sunrise/sunset times along with the tide chart on the same screen.

Knot Wars
Need a new knot? Need to know how to tie braided line to fluorocarbon or fluorocarbon to mono? This app has videos of knots along with the break strength of each knot. Knot Wars shows the suggested uses for each knot which is extremely helpful. Lots of great knots in this app.

River Flows
Simple app that tracks the flow and water level of major rivers. Very handy in determining if a river is too high or too low to fish. I would not recommend solely using this app to determine if it’s safe to kayak fish or float a river but its definitely worth a look when planning river trips. It shows several days worth data which allows you to see the rise, fall and flow rate after a rain.

I hope these apps will make your next kayak fishing trip a little more interesting! Please remember to keep you phone dry though! If you do decide to use your phone during your next kayak fishing outing, here’s a good option from Austin Kayak: Aquapac Electronics Case.
